Gardner was a local businessman whose large family came on many occasions to Dignity Health Dominican Hospital for care. With the death of his wife, Gardner moved out of town to be closer to family members. Gardner never forgot the part Dominican played in his life and that of his family. He continued periodic contributions throughout his lifetime and his will provided for a generous fixed amount to Dominican Hospital Foundation designated to support "family care".
